The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, is an investment classic which Warren Buffett believes is 'the best book on investment ever written'. The main subjects are 'value investment' and the advantages of a systematic approach. Not a quick and easy read, but full of interesting ideas, which were revolutionary at the time.

Security Analysis by Graham and Dodd, is the fifth edition, bringing this investment classic up to date. The book, which is hard going, outlines in great detail the principles and techniques for measuring asset values, cash flow, earnings and other statistics.

Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Robert Edwards and John Magee, is an authoritative book on technical analysis. A very hard read, only for the dedicated.

Stocks for the Long Run by Jeremy Siegel. A research-based book which shows, through meticulous analysis, that when long-term purchasing power is considered, stocks are actually a safer investment than other supposedly rock-solid investments. Siegel's study is important because of the long-running debate about the respective merits of stocks, bonds and other asset classes. His research rams home the point that 'safety' is not just about the risk of losing your money through fraud or some other calamity. It is also about the predictability of long-term returns and the extent to which they mitigate the capital-eroding effects of inflation. The author also stresses the importance of timing.
